Erimus History

Erimus Terrace was one of three streets, (the others were Pioneer Street and Stainton Street) created to house workers for the The Erimus Ironworks which opened in 1872.
The works closed three years later because of a depression in the iron trade but were re-opened in 1880 by William Whitwell.
The stone was moved to Thornaby Cemetery Chapel in 1959 before the terrace was demolished in 1963 to make way for British Rail developments.

It was removed from Thornaby Chapel shortly before its demolition in the early 1970s and, by now badly weathered, it was put into store.

In view of its condition, the Thornaby branch of the Royal British Legion arranged for the six names to be added to the Thornaby Cenotaph. However, it was also felt the original memorial should be restored and given a more fitting home within the cemetery.
